From modest beginnings in 1886 as a small collection of books once housed in a building that doubled as the post office, Cold Spring Harbor Library and Environmental Center is now a robust, community-centric information hub situated on five acres of the Cold Spring Harbor State Park.
Taking full advantage of its waterfront, hillside location, the Library was cut into the side of the hill, with reading rooms and public spaces strategically overlooking the harbor. Building the Library involved extensive amounts of site work due to the property’s sloped grade and retaining wall.
With its high-end interior and exterior finishes, today, Cold Spring Harbor Library and Environmental Center is considered a unique collection of quiet places and beautiful spaces—from the main reading room with the cozy, stone fireplace to the large, wraparound outdoor porch.
